I went to school for a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. I got a job working for a power utility in Calgary, Alberta, fresh out of school. I’m originally from New-Brunswick, way over on the east coast.
I programmed a lot in university. Mostly with microcontrollers and FPGAs to build embedded electronic devices. I also took quite a few classes around Unix systems and digital and radio communications. I remember how I used to love writing code and navigating any Unix or Unix-like environment.
After I graduated university I wanted to keep programming as a hobby. I gravitated towards android development since I was an android enthusiast myself and because of the low entry cost and requirements. I quickly finished and released my first app on the Google Play Store, what an exciting moment!
My son was born in 2014. One of the greatest moments in my life. At about 3 months old he started having seizures and we realized he had an underlying genetic disorder. My life hasn’t been the same since then. My son is everything to me and my whole life gravitates around him and his needs.
Caring and being involved in my son’s life got tough working a full-time office job. I started dreaming of being able to work from home, being with my him everyday and going to every appointment without having to juggle crazy schedules.
I got so obsessed with the idea of working from home that I decided to take action and get serious about programming. I started working on a portfolio, dedicating as much time to the task as I could. I started applying to remote android developer positions. Before long I was offered a job at Trōv that I excitedly accepted.
Some time has passed now and I can honestly say that I made the right decision. We have a much more balanced life now. Trōv has been amazing and I couldn’t ask for a better company and better people to work with.
I’m now a Software Engineer and I’m forever learning new things and expanding my skills.
